The refreshed program includes a new UAE-designer focused exhibition and an open call for the Abwab 2020 pavilion
Dubai Design Week is forging ahead and set to take place from 9th – 14th November this year. With a focus on designing for positive impact and emphasis on new opportunities for the creative community, the 2020 edition will present a revised program consisting both digital as well as physical components that incorporate distancing measures, at the festival’s main hub in Dubai Design District (d3) and in locations across the city. Adapting to current realities and social shifts, the festival will offer new opportunities for the creative community by giving centre stage to the local and regional talent. The revised program includes an open call for the Abwab 2020 pavilion, a new UAE-designer focused exhibition, and a hybrid talks program that will explore pressing topics such as redefining the way we will live in the near future.
Celebrating UAE Creatives
Dubai Design Week 2020 will cast a spotlight on UAE-based creatives and home-grown design with a new exhibtion. Aspiring designers are called to submit design proposals to be part of a curated showcase that will present the works of an emerging generation of talents with promising ideas. The exhibition will be one of the main programme highlights of this year’s edition offering the participating designers exposure and support to help kickstart projects. The deadline for submissions is 20th July, 2020. More information here.
An Invitation to Take Part
The organisers also are inviting creatives from all disciplines to be part of the varied programme of installations, pop-ups, talks and workshops. Submissions for ideas and proposals to participate in Dubai Design Week 2020 are now open, but be quick – the closing date for applications is July 10. Additionally, proposals for semi-permanent outdoor installations in d3 with a focus on problem-solving – particularly the new challenges arising from social distancing – are being encouraged. Abwab 2020 Pavilion Open Call
An annually remodelled platform celebrating design talent from the wider region, this year Abwab calls upon creatives from the MENA region to submit innovative concept proposals for an architectural pavilion, to take centre stage in d3. During Dubai Design Week, the pavilion will serve as a multipurpose space, hosting different activities, from talks and workshops to exhibitions. The winning proposal will be awarded $40,000 in production fees and 10,000 in design fees, including all project development technical plans, renders and production management and supervision. Proposals need to address themes related to city dwellers’ constantly evolving relationship with public space. The public interventions can serve the purposes of shelter from the weather, spaces for gathering under current physical distancing requirements, or simply provide space to pause and relax.More information here.
